Being Consistent
The Web is a fast medium but there are things about the New Media that still take time, like getting your message out. Being Consistent is like a magic formula, long known but all too often forgotten. Consistency is a virtue in business as much as it is in life.
Many years ago when I read a lot of material about Buddhism, Taoism and Zen, I came across a saying that I have never forgotten and have often tried to explain to people who I felt could benefit from its wisdom. Sadly I don't remember who said it and I'm sure my translation is inaccurate but the message is the same either way:
When walking walk
When sitting sit
Above all
Don't wobble
Seth Godin wrote a whole book on the subject of keeping on when things get gummy called The Dip. Read it.
Now don't get the idea I am telling you to beat your head against a brick wall. You do need to know when to change course but changing course is a lot different to vacillating. Let's look at the quote again.
"When walking walk." Simple. If you want to walk funky then that's fine but you can't be funky walking and sloping at the same time. If you do funky walk and slope at the same time that must be a new thing. Maybe that is funky sloping but it isn't either funky walking or sloping any more.
"When sitting sit." Same thing really but does say that we can do different things at different points in time. Sometimes we can choose to sit other times we can choose to walk.
"Above all, don't wobble." This is the kicker. If you are walking you can't be trying to sit. When sitting you can't be trying to walk or things are going to get ugly and complex for you.
People all over the place keep trying to sit/walk and keep doing it even though it clearly isn't working out for them. These sit/walkers wonder why their lives and businesses don't take off. How can things work if they never give them time to mature?
How to not Wobble
There is no easy answer that you are likely to accept here. The saying tells it all and gives the answers, in itself. Wobblers hate simplicity but simplicity is always the answer.
Of course realising that you are wobbling is the first step. You can tell that you are living in wobbletown when you whole life seems like a pain. When you are spending more time complaining than being enthusiastic. Maybe enthusiasm has left you altogether. Think back on why you are doing a thing.
At the end of his Beyond the Attractor Factor video Joe Vitale speaks some about letting go and taking inspired action. He says that you must let go of the worry of failure and follow what you know is right.
What I will say is similar. Be passionate and let that guide you in what you know is right. Don't let yourself get knocked off course. Bob Geldoff knew that he needed to do something about the starving in Africa. Almost everyone said to him that nothing could be done. He talked and bullied his way into one of the most ambitious projects ever and changed the world seemingly overnight with Live Aid. His passion and belief achieved this. His passion and belief drew just about every pop star in the UK and USA to Live Aid and then to getting donations of time, products, services and money from just about everyone he met as well as well as $280 Million dollars from the public. He didn't wobble in this.
Either way once your passion sets you on a course don't let anything make you deviate until either you know it is time to change or you have finished.
