Make Decisions Easily
I aim to publish a full article every week. This week is slightly different because much of the article (book) is in another place. No need to publish it twice.
Many of us get stressed when we have to make decisions. The thought of change makes us go to water. Why should the world have to change? Aren't things fine the way they are? The water is only up to my chin. I can still breathe so why are you trying to get me to move?
We are equipped to handle change and make the necessary decisions that go along but we have massive resistance from fear of the unknown. After all, an empty room may not be empty at all. It could contain a hungry horde of hamsters - of the flesh eating variety, eek!
One of the biggest ways that we slow ourselves down is that we get caught up in this worry that stops us from moving forward to enjoy life. In business this can mean no changes to our products or sales process to make them better. Unhappiness or lost sales are not a desired result but that is what we often work on most because we focus far too much on perceived safety.
The process I am suggesting is - When faced with a situation:
- Gain all the information you can in a short period of time
- Relax and step back so that you can see trends and patterns in the facts you have
- Choose a course of action and commit
I call this my 5 Minute Rule because you want to do all of this in 5 minutes. What this forces you to do is deal with the world as it is right here and now instead on in an imaginary universe populated by evil hamsters. It also forces you to act instead of turning into a juddering stressball.
Now many of you may be screaming that 5 mins is not enough time to research and make important decisions. Yes I understand but guess what? No one expects you to get every decision right based on how the world will be in unknown futures. If you find you aren't happy with where that decision got you then that makes it time to make a new decision based on the new facts you have from where you are now.
This is a variant of psychology's "Baby Steps" where instead of cracking under the strain of momentous decisions the patient is encouraged to break everything into small manageable steps.
The only warning I give is not to keep reversing course every few minutes. You need to be consistent and follow your vision.
